Would you like to see a "Member Map" of sorts on the Site?

Postby KnightTemplar on Fri Sep 07, 2007 5:06 pm

Would you like to see a "Member Map" of sorts on the Site? I have a few ideas for it, but some of them can't be done at this moment (using free sites). The one I think I will probably go with, at least at the start, is a large World map and just overly points on top of it.

Here is a second question about it, would you like to have individual names at the points, number of members per point, or just points?

I think it would be a great idea, I'm all for it. as for the second question, I think having a list of names would make it too cluttered, I'm thinking just dots. Maybe color-coded like a green dot = 1 member, yellow = 5, orange =10, red = 50 (yes I do realize we don't even have 50 people yet)

I would like to see individual names at the points. Now once we register our 1,000th member that might not be feasible. At that point we may want to take another look at our options.

I'm kindof Torn between names and just dots. Names would be nice, but some members may not want everyone knowing where they live, with just dots they may be more likely to tell the admins and thus let the map be more representative.

im sure they wouldnt include where they live exactly.....it could be just a first name and an area. For instance i live in a small town in PA in Perry County, it could say i live near Harrisburg or something.

Well, there is a place in the profile for your location, but most people don't tell where they are on that. I know the admins (or at least KnightTemplar) can see the IP address you registered with and get a general idea from that as to where you "live", but I know that if I didn't want to broadcast to the world what area I lived in, and someone did it for me, I would not be happy. That is why I would prefer dots only. With dots only, they can be added via the IP address method and still without giving too much away in the way of privacy.

What do you mean by that? Will it be like Mapquest, or GoogleEarth, or whatever?

Well, the more I think about it, the less I like the idea of Member names on the map.

I'd have to agree that names should NOT be displayed (privacy and all that).
Depending on how accurate the map is, I'd even suggest some way for the members to opt out of being displayed (perhaps the same could be done for the names as well?)

Could an example of this map be shown so we can get an idea of what it would be like?
Or at least how the members would be indicated by, i.e Country/State/County/City, which level ? (adjusted as necessary for each nation,of course)

Looks like we have one, though not sure how effective it will be since it seems many people (including myself at the moment) are not placing themselves on there.

I think it would work by region/county etc using colour to represent member density (ie. how many from that region). People could put in their signature their location (general) relating to the map if they wanted. Solves the privacy issue. Maybe have a template system, so that everyone's location section of their signature look reasonably uniform and thereby neater. Maybe with country flags? Or am I going a bit too far? lol

Just a few thoughts 8)
