I'm not saying this is the reason, but it is something to consider before yelling sexual discrimination (everyone in America, I'm not sure about other countries, seems to want to just pull out the discrimination charge even if none exists). In a lesbian relationship, the dominant party typically has more masculine traits and would probably be more likely to join the military than "Prima Ballerina". Also, the typical stereotype of a gay man is that he is effeminate, which is not always the case and not all effeminate men are gay, that is just the stereotype but combat and the military probably don't attract many effeminate men. Also, not to say all women in the military are lesbians by any means, just that the more "masculine" a woman is, the more likely the military might be attractive to them.
As for the "does it matter" comment, I will say this and let you make your own decision. Assume you are not homosexual and another member is (and you know it). Would you go to the community shower with them? If you were assigned them as your buddy, would you cozy up with them in a slip trench? Ect.
