Albania and Croatia join NATO

Postby Hobilar on Fri May 15, 2009 8:45 am

Albania and Croatia formally became members of NATO on April 1 2009, bringing the number of Allied nations in the collective security alliance to 28.

This marked only the sixth time NATO had allowed new members to join, following the addition of Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Romania in 2004; the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland in 1999; Spain in 1982; West Germany in 1955; and Greece and Turkey in 1952. The founding members were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the UK and the USA on April 4 1949.

France pulled out of the Alliance in March 1966 but on March 17 2009 the French National Assembly voted for a return.

Did that require a vote by NATO to allow France to return?
