Plans by French President Nicolas Sarkozy for his country to return to full NATO membership were ratified by the French National Assembly in a vote on March 17.
France pulled out of NATO in March 1966 because of perceived US dominance of the alliance and the feeling that this undermined France’s sovereignty, but has remained a member, albeit outside the integrated Military Command structure.
Although many opposition politicians have opposed the move, feeling that France would be put under more pressure to increase involvement in NATO-led missions, the vote to rejoin was passed by 328 votes for a return against 238 cast against.
