Yes, this nation has been divided, but I don't think it is purely (or even mostly) political, nor do I believe we are beyond hope (yet). I think one of the biggest divides in this country, and probably the most dangerous for the future of the country, is the racial divide. That being said, and before I go any farther, I feel I should say I have nothing against those of differing ancestry (I have plenty of friends of varying ancestry). Now, to continue...
As Theodore Roosevelt stated, "this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all." He railed repeatedly against "hyphenated Americans" and the prospect of a nation "brought to ruins" by a "tangle of squabbling nationalities", which is exactly what is happening. You have African-Americans, Latin-Americans (Mexican, Peruvian, ect), Japanese-Americans, ect. In my opinion, the only ones who have any right to be Anything Americans are Native Americans, anything else and you are saying that being an American isn't good enough and that you have to put a qualifier in to differentiate yourself from other Americans (read, DIVIDE the U.S. into sub-cultures).
My personal opinion is that as long as the NAACP and organizations like it exist, there WILL be discrimination, if not real, they will make it appear that there is. In addition, they CREATE racial discrimination by "reverse discrimination". There are plenty of cases out there where qualified people didn't get a job because of either "racial quotas" or where 2 people have the same qualifications "race" is taken into account and the "minority" gets the job. What ever happened to the thought of getting by on your merits?
I detest life-insurance agents; they always argue that I shall some day die, which is not so.
