English vs British

English vs British

Postby KnightTemplar on Wed Jan 28, 2009 12:25 pm

Hobiler, as the only member from the U.K. that is active on here I guess I'll direct this to you.

Is there a difference between being British and being English? If so, are there generally hard feelings harbored if you are one and are called the other? Also, if there is a difference, could you explain it please. Thanks.

First, the history lesson (grin)

The islands comprising what is today known as the British Isles were originally named by Julius Caesar who mistakenly believed that the native Celtic inhabitants were from a Belgic tribe called the Britanni. It was not until 926 AD that King Athelstan brought all the various Anglo-Saxon kingdoms south of the River Forth into a single unified kingdom (England). Meanwhile beyond the northern border Irish invaders, the Scots, had overrun the indigenous people, the Picts, and set up their own ‘Kingdom of the Scots’ (later Scotland). These two countries would ultimately come together in 1603 when King James VI of Scotland was crowned James I of England (following the death of the childless Elizabeth I)

Therefore we are all British but differ in where our parents were born. For instance, I was born in London of English parents. So when I am asked to give my nationality I will write British-English. Someone from north of the border might write British-Scottish. Others could be British-Welsh, British-Irish, British-Indian, British-Pakistani, British-Manx etc.

So you can call me both British or English for both are true…But you shouldn’t be calling someone from Scotland (or Wales or Ulster, or Mann) ‘English’ for you just might get a different response (after all there is the honour of our national sports teams to uphold)

Hope that makes some sort of sense.

I did not know that Hobilar, and I love history lessons :D

When my brother spent a semester in London, and then came back home, he tried to give me a history lesson but it was all too confusing. Sometime in the near future when I am done with school and such, I will be making a trip there so I can see all the cool things my brother saw and described.

Why wait? Could you not enquire if your school operates a Student exchange programme?

I have looked into it, but things current activity with family (and girlfriend) keep me here. And I also looked at how much longer I would have to stay in school if I got into the exchange program. I'm 22, in less than a year I get kicked off of my parent's health insurance and being a diabetic I can't afford to be in school for very much longer if I'm not on health insurance (I would be bankrupt just trying to pay for medical supplies). So I'm getting it cranked out in a short amount of time. So it won't be too long till I graduate....then the fun starts :D

Hills... LOTS of hills... At least it's good practice if I make it to the selection weekend...

Pretty much listed everything Sheffield is "famous" for :P

Nope! There are three more...

Trams
Meadowhall shopping complex
Don Valley Stadium

Oh! and I think Sheffield has an Ice Hockey Team (which since nobody else in the UK plays Ice Hockey means they win all the trophies).

The UK has an Ice Hockey team? Well, that's very good. Because ice hockey between the US and Canada could use some improvements. The more countries which get involved, the better :D
