Americans

Postby CrazyCatman on Tue Nov 25, 2008 2:37 pm

Ok, I can't believe I am writing this. I fully expect AP to hunt me down for this, and Hobilar to have a field day...

I was watching Numbers last night (a past episode), and realized that I owe Hobilar an apology of sorts.

In the show, there was a train crash (A freight train got on the wrong rail line and was hit by a passenger train). The head FBI agent was covering his bases and asked someone else to contact Homeland Security to see if there was a terrorism connection. The new agent overheard him and while questioning the surviving freight train conductor, kept accusing the other conductor of being a terrorist (solely based on the fact she heard "terrorism" and the conductor was a Syrian immigrant).

That got me thinking, and I realized that, sure it was a TV show, but I have run across several people like that. I know I'm not a racist, elitist, inconsiderate, self-centered, human being (and I hope I don't come across as one), I know that there are several Americans (as well as people from other countries) who fall into at least one, if not all, of the aforementioned categories.

I personally think that most Americans (politicians excluded) are good people, but it is the loud, obnoxious, minority, and not the quiet majority, that tends to make an impact, especially to those from other countries.
I detest life-insurance agents; they always argue that I shall some day die, which is not so.

Oh CCM you would be surprised....

I completely agree with everything you said. It's sad what a hand full (the minorities you were referring to) can do to turn an image into garbage.

Oddly enough, I was thinking about this in traffic tonight, and actually made the comment that I hate Americans (fortunately no one heard me). There was a little road work where the road went from 2 lanes to one and a turn lane, so traffic started to back up. Well, lots of people decided that they were too important to wait in line like everyone else so they went into the turn lane to pass everyone and get back in the real lane farther up the street. These people trying to force their way in not only caused even more delays in the actual lane, not only caused the turn lane to be blocked, but also caused an accident thus delayed everyone. As was mentioned, it isn't everyone, or even most Americans, but those that are asses cause problems for everyone around them.
"So of the stories you told me, which ones were true?"
"All of them were true."
"What about the lies?"
"Especially the lies."

Can't be worse than the idiot I saw today-Driving a Morgan, in December (in freezing conditions), with the roof down.

Wow, I never thought I'd see the day when Crazy and AP would both be making comments against Americans.

No, it's just that I have recently ran across some things that have opened my eyes a little more. While I still find some of Hobilar's past comments "distasteful", I think I can see a little better now where he is coming from with many of them.

As have I. I have calmed down my way of thinking and "opened" up just a little more...trying to get away from those nasty, close-minded American ways ;) .

In the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series, we find a spaceship full of people who say they were one of three ships escaping a doomed planet. The "A" ship carried the great leaders, scientists, and thinkers. The "C" ship carried the workers, those who actually made things. Theirs, the "B" ship, consisted of middle managers, hairdressers, telephone sanitizers, and the like. It eventually becomes clear that their planet was not in fact doomed, and that they were the victims of a ploy to rid their world of a useless third of the population.

Here is the thing though... Our "great thinkers" are all going overseas (Japan, India, ect). Our Workers are going to Mexico, China, ect. Leaving the U.S. with the "B Ship"
