"Stingray" Light Tank

Postby KnightTemplar on Tue Aug 14, 2007 8:26 am

The Stingray light tank was developed to fill requirements for a light tank with increased strategic and tactical mobility and main battle tank firepower. Stingray fires all NATO 105-mm ammunition, as well as British and U.S. armor-piercing, fin-stabilized discarding sabot ordnance. It travels at speeds of 44 mph, climbs 60-percent gradients, and traverses 2.7-foot vertical obstacles and water depths to 3.5 feet. The Stingray is the only light tank mounting the NATO 105-mm cannon in production.

The Cadillac-Gage Stingray light tank was developed specifically for the export market by (the now) Textron Marine & Land Ststems. To reduce development and procurement costs, proven sub-systems were utilised in the tank's development. The stabalised Royal Ordnance 105 mm low recoil force gun which is fitted with a muzzle brake, thermal sleeve and fume extractor is able to fire all standard ammunition (including APFSDS-Armour piercing Fin stabalised Discarding Sabot). The tank is powered by a Detroit Diesel Ml 8V-92TA coupled to a Allison Transmission XTG-411-2A automatic transmission (giving a power to weight ratio of 25.9 hp/t). The Stingray weighs in with a combat weight of 21,205 kg (46,651 lb)

Standard equipment for the Stingray includes a computerised fire control system, day/night sights for the commander and gunner, computerised fire control system, fire detection and supression system, and NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) protection for the four man crew. In addition the Stingray has the options of thermal sights, land navigation system and different levels of protection.

A Stingray II was also developed, with the prototype being completed in 1994/1995. This incorporated a number of improvements including a new armour package, an upgraded fire control system and thermal sights for the gunner linked to a display for the commander.

As far as I am aware, the only customer for the Singray has been Thailand, which purchased 106 vehicles. These being delivered between 1988-1990.
