Organized Labor (Labor Unions)

Without going into my thoughts too much (though I'm sure if you look hard enough you can find them elsewhere on the forum), what do you think about Labor Unions (or Organized Labor)?
I detest life-insurance agents; they always argue that I shall some day die, which is not so.

I think they are bad. Sure at one point they served a purpose, but that time has passed and now they are one of the main reasons jobs are leaving the U.S.

Parents in California are being told they can't home school their kids unless they have teaching credentials. Justices say parents do not have a constitutional right to home school their children. Instead, the court says, the law requires parents to send their children to a full time public or private school or have them be taught by accredited tutors at home. That means more than 166,000 children are being truants and their parents are at risk of legal prosecution, with fines and even the removal of kids from the home a possibility. The ruling was applauded by California's teachers unions, but opponents say California is now the only state in the union to deny parents the right to teach their children at home.

They served their purpose in the early 20th Century. However, they are doing a lot more damage than good for what they are trying to stand for, they should be erased completely.

On yet another morning of grim economic news, President Obama sought to further distance himself from his predecessor on Friday as he announced steps that he said would strengthen organized labor and improve the lot of middle-class Americans.

At a White House ceremony, the president signed three executive orders that he said would “reverse many of the policies towards organized labor that we’ve seen these last eight years, policies with which I’ve sharply disagreed.”

Soon afterward, Vice President Biden drew applause when he flung another dart at former President George W. Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney (on Mr. Cheney’s 68th birthday) as he told labor officials in the audience, “Welcome back to the White House.”

“I do not view the labor movement as part of the problem,” Mr. Obama said. “To me, it’s part of the solution.”

Oh great. First off, I do not see it professional to run down your predecessors (no matter your views or opinions, it only adds to the problem of a divided country...but that's another topic!). Secondly, and I reinstate, unions do not serve a useful purpose anymore. We are in different times. How is it that the general public knows this and so do politicians but it is completely ignored in bills and initiatives? I know it deals with mostly money, but if it is not good then why do it anyway?

Because the Unions are the ones that pay to get politicians elected, so they are basically blackmailing the politicians into letting them continue.
