Odd headlines

Postby KnightTemplar on Mon Oct 05, 2009 8:18 am

I've seen a lot of odd headlines and news reports about Afghanistan recently and the one I saw today made me decide to post about it.

Here it is...
Taliban under attack in area where U.S. soldiers killed
Seriously, if that isn't a "duh!" headline I don't know what is. Of course they are under attack, it is a war and soldiers were killed by them, so of course there will be retaliation. What else gets me is that there is only a brief mention of the two Afghan Security Forces members that were killed as well, and you can't really claim that it is because it is an American news source, since Reuters is British.

It's funny with all the latest "old news" reporting that is going around. Seems to be there is a huge push here in the States from all different groups to force Obama to make a drastic decision on what to do in Afghanistan. Seeing how he "clearly" knows what he's doing in Iraq, he most likely make a poor decision in Afghanistan. A lot of countries want us out of there, and I don't really blame them...the Russians couldn't even get anywhere in Afghanistan. So maybe by pulling up related news, and combining it with old stuff the media can push to have a decision made based off of public opinion. Personally I think we shouldn't be sending in ground troops into those hills, but instead start fire-bombing, dropping the biggest things next to nuclear weapons and level those mountains.

Here is another (actually needs to be a pair) and not so much the headline as what is said...

1) Barack Obama: Taleban can be involved in Afghanistan future which says:
President Obama is prepared to accept some Taleban involvement in Afghanistan’s political future and is unlikely to favour a large influx of new American troops being demanded by his ground commander, a senior official said last night.

2) France condemns attack in Afghanistan which says:
"We once again express to the Afghan authorities France's resolute support in the battle against terrorism," the ministry said.

On the same day, one French soldier died from injury suffered from a explosion in Afghanistan days ago, which accounts for the 36th death of French army in Afghan territory since 2001.

Did anyone catch that? The "warmongering" U.S., with it's relatively low casualty rate (based on casualties vs troops sent) is unlikely to send more, while the "cowardly" French with it's relatively high casualty rate (again based on casualties vs troops sent) and who had just lost one of its soldiers the same day, expressed its resolute support in the battle against terrorism.
