Next President's Tricked-Out Supercopter

Even the president’s ride can be hot-rodded. That’s the best way to describe the 23 choppers scheduled to replace the current fleet of Marine One VH-3Ds and VH-60Ns. Outfitted with a kitchen, a bathroom and a White House-worthy high-speed communications suite, the VH-71 is closer in capabilities (and amenities) to Air Force One than to its short-hop predecessors.

Development of the VH-71, which had its first test flight in Yeovil, England, in July, was accelerated following the Sept. 11 attacks, with Lockheed Martin promising five production models by 2009. The remaining choppers, due by 2018, will include even more communications systems and performance boosts.

New Marine One Specs
• Long Range /// With three super-efficient engines, the VH-71s will travel up to 350 miles. Today’s VH-3Ds have a 100-mile range.

• Oval Cabin /// The VH-71 is billed as an “Oval Office in the sky,” with sound- and vibration-reducing systems, missile protection and seating for 14 passengers.

• Lineage /// The chopper that the VH-71 is based on, the AgustaWestland-built EH-101, has been used for search-and-rescue in Canada and troop transport in Bosnia.

From the October 2007 issue of Popular Mechanics

This sounds sweet. I don't think it is supposed to be used for more than just short trips (relatively), but more functional than it's predecessors.

One of my good buddies works for L.M. and all he does is work on the computer systems for the new chopper

A bathroom in the President's Helicopter?

Why can't he use a bucket like the rest of us? (Grin)

Gives a whole new meaning to the term "Being P***ed on from a great height" (Ha! Ha!)

Oh Yes! and why does he need 23 Helicopters -Wouldn't it be cheaper to just empty the bucket after each flight.

What does he want with a kitchen in his Helicopter-Can't the First Lady get out of bed and make him some sandwiches (just like everybody else's wife has to).

"High-speed communications suite"-Is that a Posh name for a Cell Phone?

The Pentagon has announced today their plans for a major update of the Presidential Helicopter Fleet to meet essential requirements for the next decades.

A contract for the improvements of the 23 luxury helicopters has yet to be awarded, but a budget of $73.5 billion has been set by the treasury. Work on the upgraded Helicopters is expected to take three years (Thirty if the contract is awarded to Lockheed) and will incorporate a number of vital features needed for the future security of the United States.

Among the many new features the Helicopters will be equipped with:

• An oval swimming pool
• Private Cinema
• Gymnasium
• Four Poster bed
• Gold-plated bathroom taps
• Walk-in Closet
• Massage Parlour and Hairdressers

The U.K. is not immune to air transports for heads of state, though they just charter a plane. However, there are drawbacks to that and they even decided recently that, given the security concerns of chartering commercial aircraft, the government had planned to acquire two dedicated executive transports for the use of the Royal Family and Government. The planes were dubbed 'Blair Force One' by the media.

I actually don't know why 23, but I do understand why they are getting several. One travels with the president wherever he goes (in the U.S. or internationally), they are used for transport of other dignitaries, and several are also used as decoys when flying to thwart would-be assassins. I remember seeing 5 in flight (and one on the ground at the Mall) when I was in D.C. in the summer of 2000.
