'Ma Deuce' Days May be Numbered

Discussion on advances in Military equipment and weaponry over time.

'Ma Deuce' Days May be Numbered

Postby Luther Sloan on Fri Jun 20, 2008 9:47 am

Probably the longest serving weapon in the U.S. military arsenal is the Browning .50-caliber M2 machine gun. Often referred to as "ma deuce" for its M2 designation, the weapon entered U.S. service at the end of World War I, being scaled up from the Browning .30-caliber M1917 machine gun. The .50-caliber weapon was initially designated M1921.

Now, after almost 90 years of service, the U.S. Army has moved to replace Browning's remarkable machine gun. The Army recently ordered three prototypes of a lightweight .50-caliber machine gun. Produced by General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products, the weapon weighs about one-half of the current .50-caliber M2HB (Heavy Barrel) machine gun, fires with less recoil and is equipped with technology to improve accuracy, according to the company.

The Army and Special Operations Command (SOCOM) will test the new guns and then apply the lessons learned to a potential production design. Low-rate initial production could begin as soon as 2011.

It would take several years for the new weapon to replace the "ma duce" in U.S. service. But even if it does so, the M1921/M2 would have been in service for a century.

Ma Duce, B-52, they sure knew how to make them back in the day didn't they?

"All of them were true."
"What about the lies?"
"Especially the lies."

Seems a common trend these days. The farther back in time the better the craftsmanship and the longer something will last. I think we put too much emphisis on cost these days and not enough on quality.

Yeah. I assume that, being from around Nashville, you know that all too well (the Parthenon and all). Our Parthenon is less than 100 years old and has already had to be repaired a lot, where as, had the original not been blown up, it would probably still be in pristine condition.

I was amazed when I went out to Dayton, OH to see the airplane museum. That was years ago, but I remember them saying that there are still B-17 Flying Fortresses still being in use by private guys? Has anyone ever seen one of these in action by chance? I would love to take a trip on one.

I apologize...my post had absolutely nothing to do with the Ma Deuce. For some reason I saw B-52 in there and confused myself. So, please ignore that post I made.

Not a problem. And to answer your question, there is a B-17 that visits Smyrna, TN regularly, and for a price you can ride in it.

I wonder if that is the same B-17 that visits Harrisburg, PA every once in a while. I got to get on it, but didn't have the money to go up for a ride.

When it comes to weapons like machine guns, or any type of rifle or shotgun, keep it simple and stupid. The more moving parts you have, the more chance you have of something malfunctioning. Plus, the easier it is to clean a weapon the more accurate and trust worthy it will be. Plus, with all this great hi-tech gear they have for rifles now and all the electronics, it takes the soldier out of the gun. The gun is not the one that does the killing, it is the soldier, and the less you have to go wrong the more of a soldier you will have.
