M3 Sub-machine Gun a.k.a "Grease Gun"

Discussion on Equipment and Weaponry

M3 Sub-machine Gun a.k.a "Grease Gun"

Postby General Forestry on Wed Sep 24, 2008 9:36 am

The American M3 Sub-machine Gun, also known as the "Grease Gun" was a design developed in WW2, and most likely the oddest looking weapon developed. It fired a .45 cal round and was purely and automatic gun. Simple design, some spot welding, metal stamping and you have a weapon. It used a blow-back firing system, it was an open bolt which was assisted by two parallel wire guides. Absolutely a simple weapon design. Now I heard some rumors, could really never find any information besides the History Channel, but it was air-dropped to the French people's so they had at least something to defend themselves from the Nazis. Is this true? What advantages were there to having a weapon like this? Source: Wikipedia

I thought it was the Sten gun that was air-dropped into France.

According to Wikipedia, the Sten Gun or else "Plumber's Nightmare" was an invention by the British Army during WW2. There was no indication whether it was airdropped into France or not, but I'm going to keep on digging...

I know it was used by French Resistance because of how easy it was to conceal, and how simple it was to disassemble and reassemble.
"So of the stories you told me, which ones were true?"
"All of them were true."
"What about the lies?"
"Especially the lies."
