Watched the first episode of the seven part Emmy-winning serial, John Adams, last night. It was not at all what I had expected (there have been some real horrors in the past). The script is written with real sympathy for the characters and their situation in Boston during the 1770s. Paul Giamatti, in the lead role, is a first class actor (and it is a wonder that he is not better known on this side of the Atlantic-The Royal Shakespeare Company should be begging to sign him up.
If the Americans are starting to produce costume dramas of this standard then I suspect that the BBC (Always acknowledged as being the world leaders in producing these sort of dramas) had better watch out-for the ‘Colonials’ are looking to provide stiff competition.
I look forward to the next episode to see if this show can keep up the high standard of the opening episode.
