"best" military invention

Postby CrazyCatman on Mon Jul 30, 2007 10:17 pm

This is obviously an opinion thread. I just wanted to know what you guys think the best weapon, machine, plane, tank whatever is and why.

(this really didn't fit in here completely, but couldn't find a place for it where everything was encompased. Feel free to move it to a more appropriate location)

Anyway, mine is not technically an invention, but more of an idea. I would have to say M.A.S.H. units.

As I thought about this question, I tried to think what invention had the greatest impact on warfare tactics and lead to even greater inventions. I kept coming back to the same answer. In my opinion the bow and arrow with its long history may have had a greater impact on the outcome of conflicts and lead to greater innovations in weaponry than anything else. (Again, this is just my opinion.)

Archaeological findings show that the bow and arrow has been around for at least 20,000 years. Findings of stone arrow heads in Africa indicate that the bow was invented there possibly as early as 50,000 BC. The bow is considered to be the first machine constructed by humans that could store energy. The principle has always been the same, the archer transfers his muscle energy into the bow with help of the string and then the bowstring passes on the power to the arrow and gives it a tremendous speed. The impact of an arrow is lethal to any pray or enemy.

I like things that are simple and effective. That is why I have to go with the A-10 Thunderbolt II. The thing has redundant systems out the wazzoo! There are all kinds of stories from Iraq where they were used and survived all kinds of things.

M-1 Garand. Some think of it as the best rifle in WWII.

Of course it is. Why would anyone think any different?

It has to be the best because it has 'Made in the USA' embassed on it. Therefore it automatically qualifies as the Best.
